The conversation first came up during an Imperious Management Group meeting. One of our associates asked who was our most important competitor. Our President, Mark, gave an answer that surprised everyone. He advised us that the real competition is ourselves and only ourselves. From a team perspective and an individual perspective, winning isn’t about who we beat externally. It’s about being better today than we were yesterday. Here is why this is important:
- It’s an Even Playing Field: When it comes to external competition, it’s a bit like a blind race. We can size up another person, but we truly don’t have all the data necessary to determine what it’s going to take to outpace them. It’s likely that they have skills that are different from ours which may or may not have impact. We do know our personal best, our qualities, and what we bring to the table. We do have the ability to better ourselves.
- It Allows Us to Define Success on Our Terms: Our Imperious Management Group culture empowers us to grow at our own paces. This practice allows us to learn and feel comfortable to reach for the next levels. As we discussed, when we determine what success means to us, we’re motivated to achieve it.
We often celebrate our personal and team victories alike. Follow Imperious Management Group on [Instagram] to learn about our latest accomplishments.
